USA Triathlon, the national governing body for triathlon and
duathlon in
the United States, and MountainQuest Adventures, a leading multi-
sport
event company, are excited to announce the second annual USA
Triathlon
National Winter Championship. The race will take place Feb. 9,
2002 at
Snow Mountain Ranch in Winter Park, Colo., and will consist of a
10k
run, 20k mountain bike, and 10k Nordic/skate ski.
Winter triathlon has been growing in popularity in Europe and
elsewhere,
and members of the International Olympic Committee have
expressed an
interest in adding winter triathlon to the 2006 Winter Olympics
if the
sport grows beyond its European core.
"It is hoped that this year's championship will be a springboard
for
growth and interest in the United States," said Steve Locke,
executive
director of USA Triathlon.
The International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Winter Triathlon
Championships will be Feb. 19-24 in Brusson, Italy.
Last year's U.S. winter triathlon national titles went to former
world
mountain bike champion Ned Overend (Durango, Colo.) and
professional
mountain biker Gretchen Reeves (Boulder, Colo.). Other world-
class
athletes in the top three included Olympic triathlete Ryan Bolton
(Boulder, Colo.), professional cyclist Kimberly Bruckner
(Boulder,
Colo.), and former world mountain bike and Eco-Challenge
champion Mike
Kloser (Vail, Colo.).
"These athletes and others use this race as great cross-training
and
motivation during the cold of winter," said Barry Siff, co-owner
of
MountainQuest, based in Fort Collins, Colo.
