My First Tri / My Next Tri comes to Galveston
March 9, 2004
This is a competition for the "today I diet, tomorrow I
feast," ... "my walk consists of a cookie in one hand and a diet
soda in the other," ... "I just want to try something new," type
of athlete. If you can relate to any of the above, organizers
of this event are looking for you. Galveston, Texas, will host
this exciting event on March 26-28, 31, and April 3-4.My First Triathlon includes competitors as young as age six,
while the oldest may be in his or her 70s. This fun event
includes a 1/4 mile swim in the bayou at Moody Gardens, a 12-
mile bike around the island, and a three-mile run or walk all
starting and finishing in the same area. The event is designed
to introduce new athletes to the sport of triathlon as it takes
the intimidation factor out of friendly competition. Statistics show that 70% of competitors are women, with the
average age being 32. According to the evnet organizers, these
facts are remarkable considering the sport of triathlon is
generally a male-dominated sport. "There are several theories that explain why this type of event
is made up of mostly women," said Brent Kamenka, one of the
event organizers. "As we get closer to the competition, we will
be able to see how those statistics stack up with this
particular event." Kamenka also adds that there is no time limit to the triathlon
and that you can take all day to finish. His advice is: if you
get tired, stop and take a rest. They will still be waiting for
you at the finish line with a medallion in hand. So go ahead,
eat another cookie! In addition to the My First Triathlon, which is exclusively for
those who have never participated in a triathlon, is the My Next
Triathlon. This event is open to all, including seasoned multi-
sport participants. Online registration is available through the RTN web site
at www.signmeup.com/24634. For more detailed information on the My First Triathlon / My
Next Triathlon, visit the official web site at www.myfirsttri.com or call (800) 343-4466.
