DeBooms light up Memphis in May

Married U.S. triathletes Nicole and Tim DeBoom were the elite winners at the Memphis in May Triathlon on Sunday in Millington, Tenn.

Tim DeBoom (Lyons, Colo.) the two-time world Ironman champion, completed the Olympic distance - 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run - race in 1 hour, 46 minutes, 27 seconds. Bjorn Andersson of Sweden was second (1:47:47) and Jamie Cleveland (Austin, Texas) was third (1:47:55).

In the women's race, Nicole DeBoom (Lyons, Colo.) won in 1:58:57. Lauren Jensen (New Berlin, Wis.) was second in 1:59:49 and Fiona Docherty of New Zealand was third in 2:01:21.

For age groupers, Memphis in May served as the Southeast Regional Championship for the Olympic distance. Bruce Gennari (Brentwood, Tenn.) was the overall age group men's winner in 1:50:38. Melanie Holloway (Alpharetta, Ga.) was the overall age group women's winner in 2:02:21.

At the Dannon Duathlon on Saturday in Lake Pleasant, Ariz., three-time U.S. elite duathlon national champion Greg Watson (Newark, Del.) took his second Dannon series victory of the year while Desiree Ficker (Potomac, Md.) got her first.

Watson, who won the Dannon race on March 16 in Haines City, Fla., won Saturday's race (5k run, 30k bike, 5k run) in 1:20:31. Tom Jeffrey (Charlottesville, Va.) was second in 1:21:29 and Rory Mackie of Zimbabwe was third in 1:21:53.

Ficker, who finished third in Haines City, came back to win in Arizona in 1:32:31. Heather Haviland (Waukesha, Wis.) was second in 1:34:21 and Gabriela Jenks (Albuquerque, N.M.) was third in 1:36:52.

The Columbia Triathlon on Sunday in Columbia, Md., served as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship at the Olympic distance - 1.5k swim, 41k bike, 10k run.

Kevin Carter (Silver Spring, Md.) won the men's elite race in 2:00:58. Otho Keller (Timonium, Md.) was second in 2:04:25. The lone elite female participant did not finish the race.

James Bales (Alexandria, Va.) won the men's age group overall title in 2:05:59. Christy Underdonk (Kensington, Md.) won the women's overall title in 2:21:13.
