Naples Residents Win Long Distance Tri Nationals

Joe Bonness and Sara Weaver, both of Naples, Fla., won the overall titles at the Great Floridian Triathlon on Sunday in Clermont, Fla. The event served as the U.S. National Long Distance Triathlon Championship.

Bonness, 46, completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2- mile run in 9 hours, 28 minutes and 48 seconds. Not far behind were John Schneider of Concord, N.C. (10:03:53) and Kevin Kennedy of Mountain View, Calif. (10:07:33)

Weaver, 37, won the women's division in 10:34:56, almost a half hour ahead of second-place Kathleen Kinz-Smith of Southborough, Mass. (11:15:33). Lisa Purul of Safety Harbor, Fla., was third overall (11:20:55).

Nearly 950 athletes competed in the race, enjoying overcast skies and mild temperatures for most of the event.
