A team of the top-ranked U.S. triathletes will take on the
world's best
Sunday, Sept. 2, in Brisbane, Australia, at the Goodwill Games.
Led by Siri Lindley (Boulder, Colo.), who is ranked No. 1 in the
world,
the U.S. women's team will consist of Barb Lindquist (Wilson,
Wyo.; No.
4 in the world); Laura Reback (North Palm Beach, Fla.; No. 8);
Becky
Gibbs (Hopkins, Minn.; No. 15); Jennifer Gutierrez (Greenwood
Village,
Colo.; No. 22) and Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich.; No. 27).
The U.S. men's team will consist of Hunter Kemper (Longwood,
Fla.; No.
23) (pictured); Joe Umphenour (Seattle, Wash. No. 32); Andy
Kelsey
(Cupertino,
Calif.; No. 41) and Michael Smedley (Colorado Springs, Colo.;
No. 65).
Among the international competitors will be 2000 Olympic men's
gold
medallist Simon Whitfield of Canada, Olympic women's gold
medallist
Brigitte McMahon of Switzerland and current world men's No. 1
Chris Hill
of Australia.
The triathlon venue will be the South Bank Parklands and
Brisbane CBD.
Athletes will do a 1.5K swim (three laps) in the Brisbane River,
then
cycle 40K (eight laps) around South Bank and Brisbane CBD and
then run
10K (four laps) around South Bank.
The top 10 competitors will divide a $200,000 (USD) prize purse,
with
the men and women's winners getting $30,000 each.
The TNT cable network will broadcast the race in prime time (9-
11 p.m.
EDT) on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
