titles at the USA Triathlon Pro/Elite National Long Course
Triathlon National Championships on Saturday (Aug. 16) in
Arkadelphia, Ark. The race was part of the Degray Lake Half
Ironman.
Bonney (Austin, Texas) completed the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike
and 13.1-mile run in 4 hours, 6 minutes, 47 seconds. Maule
completed the women's race in 4:35:14.
The top three finishers in each race qualified for the 2004
International Triathlon Union (ITU) Long Course Triathlon World
Championships, which are likely to be July 3-4 in Sater, Sweden.
There was a $10,000 prize purse and the winners each received
$1,500.
Paul Fritzsche (Carmel, N.Y.) was second among the men in
4:08:38 and David Julian (Tempe, Ariz.) was third in 4:16:40.
Lara Shaw (Tampa, Fla.) was second among the women in 4:37:57
and Amy Cashion (Brookline, Mass.) was third in 4:44:25.

Athletes Ages 13-15 Compete at Nationals
Duncan Hoge (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Yasmine White (Arcata,
Calif.) won the U.S. titles at the triathlon national
championships for athletes ages 13-15 on Saturday (Aug. 16) in
Arkadelphia, Ark. The race was part of USA Triathlon's draft-
legal race series for youth, junior and u-23 triathletes.
The athletes competed in a draft-legal triathlon that consisted
of a 400-meter swim, 10k bike and 2.5k run.
Hoge completed the race in 33:43. Willy Pickhardt (Fayetteville,
Ark.) was second in 33:53 and Sam Schildgen (Colleyville, Texas)
was third in 37:13.
In the girls race, White finished second to Kirsten Sweetland of
British Columbia, who won in 38:12. White was second in 38:27
and Kelsey Tucker (Austin, Texas) was third in 40:36.

Junior and U-23 Triathletes Reign in Maine
Matthew Seymour (Honolulu, Hawaii), Ashley Carusone (High
Springs, Fla.), Tim O'Donnell (Shavertown, Pa.) and Sara
Tarkington (Denver, Colo.) won national titles and qualified for
the world championships at the USA Triathlon Junior and Under-23
National Championships and World Qualifier at the West Kennebunk
Fire Company Triathlon on Aug. 10 in Kennebunk, Maine. The race
was part of USA Triathlon's draft-legal race series for youth,
junior and u-23 triathletes.
The races qualified these developing triathletes for the 2003
International Triathlon Union (ITU) Triathlon World
Championships on Dec. 6-7 in Queenstown, New Zealand.
The u-23 race consisted of an Olympic distance course with a two-
lap swim, three-loop bike and two-lap run.
O'Donnell put together a strong overall race to win in 1 hour,
48 minutes, 32 seconds. David Kuendig (Daytona Beach, Fla.)
fought through leg cramps on the run to finish second in
1:49:32. Tyler Johnson (Chester, Conn.), whose run split was
33:37, was third and Logan Wealing (Remington, Ind.) was fourth.
Tarkington took the race lead on the run and won in 2:08:58.
Caitlin Shea-Kenney (Plymouth, Mass.) was second in 2:11:07.
Terra Castro (Austin, Texas) was third (2:11:35) and Andrea
Dvorak (McLean, Va.) was fourth (2:11:40). Sarah Groff
(Cooperstown, N.Y.), who led the race out of the water, had to
drop out during the bike due to a flat tire.
Juniors, ages 16-19, completed a 750m swim, a 20k bike and a 5k
run.
Seymour won the boys race in 56:23. Christopher Stehula (Arroyo
Grande, Calif.) was second in 56:59 and Imran Mahmood (Memphis,
Tenn.) was third in 57:10.
Carusone took the girls race in 1:05:25. Amanda Hahn
(Gainesville, Fla.) was second in 1:05:42 and Claire Whelan
(Burlington, Vt.) was third in 1:05:56.
Calin Brammer (Marblehead, Mass.) and Kaitlyn Ellis (Nantucket,
Mass.) won the boys and girls races for 13-15 year olds.
However, this was not a national championship for this age group.
Brammer completed a 400m swim, 10k bike and 5k run in 46:01,
beating his nearest competitor by more than 7 minutes. Ellis
finished in 53:56, also beating her nearest competitor by 7
minutes.
