Subject: RE: Double dipping for awards? IP: Logged
Message: Double dipping should be practiced by all races. I have had more than a few times where I got a first place trophy in my age group because the overall winner was in the same age class as me. I felt cheap and easy for taking a first place trophy knowing full well I wasn't first place. I would have much preferred to be given the second place I knew I earned instead of a first place based on a technicality.

Message: pretty easy to say since you'd be bringing home hardware regardless! its about adding to the # of people who get a chance to place. i'd bet the way you feel is different from the person who got an award who wouldn't have if double dipped

Message: no it is not about adding to the number of people who get to win a trophy, that argument is silly and regressive, if that is the case then just have a run-a-thon and give everyone who enters a ribbon. This is a competitive sport, you may choose to do it for other reasons but it is still a competitive venture. To ignore the fact that a person won two groups in the race just so someone can go home and pat themselves on the back by saying they were the first masters at that race when they were not is silly. Its a race people!!

Message: tgarr..yes you said it right.
The only reason for giving these meaningless and phony awards is so these runners will come back again.
Why would anyone accept an award stating he/she won something which they did not? Is it even honest to do this? Only in road racing and multi-sport events will you see this hokey stuff.
Awards should be given based on exactly how it occurred.

Message: I respect your opinion, cjo, but I disagree. If I get shut out of a trophy because of double dipping, then that's fine. I'd prefer to go home empty handed (and I have from time to time) than to get a trophy I don't deserve.

Message: thanks, MUCH better said than the previous - which smacked of the elitist snobbery that i'd say this sport usually lacks (thankfully). hey, ya'll might be right. besides, i'm a 30%er so i won't be bringing home anything anytime soon anyway. but tgarr might want to take a couple deep breaths. remember, we're also out there to have fun, people!!

Message: Thanks cjo, but my breathing is just fine. I have a great time going out and competing for the right to say I placed in a category. I don't get offended when someone else double dips or make the silly statement that running is about more people getting trophies. As far as the elitest thing goes, I suppose I am thats why they call it a race people. I also think you are pretty hypocritical on this as well, you seem to imply that I run only for hardware and you run only for fun and yet your complaint is that someone might double dip and deny a trophy to you. Thereby saying "I don't do it for the hardware I do it simply for the pleasure but by god more of us deserve hardware". If you just run for fun then why do you care if a race double dips you are still gonna have your fun right??? I argue for those deserving people to get a trophy, you argue to give even more poeple trophies and I'm the one who focuses to much on competition and you are not?? Please!!!

Message: Sorry, was trying to do three things at once when I did the last post and realized it was long-winded and not very clear. Here is a shorter version. I am told I am too competitive and focus on a trophy instead of having fun. Yet you CJO do the same thing when you write in and complain about wanting more people to get trophies, so perhaps you are no better than me in the trophy respect. If it is about fun for you then why write in at all, this issue doesn't affect you. You seem to me to be the type of person who would show up at the indy 500 in a VW micro-bus and then complain about the drivers who came to race. If you run for fun and trophies mean nothing then more power to you but don't call me elitist because I think a race means you try your hardest to place as high as you can.

Message: first, i neither claim nor think i am better than anyone. and who is it you were quoting in your 7:46 post? i did not say i race for the fun. its the competition that is fun. and i try my damdest to place as high as i can, my knees tell me i try a little too hard. my perspective comes more from the person who came in 5th and takes home a 4th than the person who came in second and takes home a 1st, you know, less of a "I won first so I deserve first" (which i guess i can understand).. and more of a "cool, the overall was in my group so i'm getting an award". and yes, i will still have my fun if a race double dips. i don't Really care, was just offering an opinion. the elitist comment came not from your point but the way you choose to make it (not to mention some your previous posts in this thread). i certainly don't know enough to pass any judgments....

Message: You are right you don't know enough to pass any judgements and yet with each post you continue to do so. Enough said on that issue.
