Jon was not saying in his article that double dipping should be allowed so the same person can win more awards. It is about the results being recorded in the order that you finished.
These guys who consistently win races for the most part don't really care about the awards.

Jon and Terry would no doubt favor doing away with mens and womens categories and with age groups and just printing a list of finishers in time order. Just make it a good old-fashioned foot race, and make it really really easy to view the results instead of constantly having to scan between the overall winners and the age group winners.

Count me among those firmly in the no double dipping under any circumstance category.

I got the impression that Jon was more interested in being able to view results that made sense, not combining men's and women's results into one.

I think it's worst in multi-sport events. Sometimes they'll have an elite wave, select wave, and then list an overall winner. Compare the times and you'll see that the overall winner was really the 17th fastest person that day. Does that make sense?

Other times the age-group champion finishes faster than the overall winner (often coming out of the elite or select wave). How "elite" is "elite" if you're getting beat by the age groupers?

Maybe if we did away with elite or select waves...

Why would anyone accept an award stating he/she was first in an age-group when some other runner or runners finished ahead of them? This is a phony, meaningless award. Call it double dipping or whatever, but call it like it is. If you are first across the finish line you are first overall and you are first in your age group and if you are a Master, you are the first Master.

Races should always recognize runners for everything they accomplish. It is not necessary to give a separate award for each category, just give one award and honor all. Just simply go deeper in the age groups or Open if races want to give more awards.

Why is road racing the only sport that does not give awards for each category a runner wins?

In baseball the hitter who has the most home runs, the most RBI's and the highest batting average is triple dipping. Right? Or maybe this hitter should accept the home run title and be excluded from the other two. This is the triple crown and is a much coveted title. You don't give the runnerup the RBI title or the batting crown. The one hitter gets it all.

Excluding age-groups from the open is ridiculous and is just a way to give someone a stupid award which they did not win let alone deserve.

Give everyone an award..but tell it exactly the way it happens.

I would be in favor of calling the first 40 yr. old to cross the line the first masters runner (which they are) and the first runner in the 40 yr. old age group (which they are). If the person who is second feels so offended by this lets call them the "first" runner up. They also could always try to be the first one to cross the line.

to Triman,
There is only one shirt you can wear on the bike tour. Would you want to wear multiple layers or take the yellow shirt? Running is not the only sport that doesnt double dip.

last time I checked the bike tour didn't have age groups, although they do recognize the best young rider as such and would let him wear the yellow if he were leading the race also.
