Subject: Houston marathon aid stations.

I was wondering if anybody is upset about the HoustoN Marathon having fewer aid stations this year. It won't really bother me, but I think this is partly to blame on the HOuston Fit "mentality" that is preached over and over, especially to the new marathoners-drink as much as possible. A lot of people are doing that, and in turn hyponatrimia is occuring in more runners.
Everybodys body is different, but drinking at every aid station in excess is not necessary. Maybe a tiny sip at every aid station is good, but you don't need 2-3 cups of water at every mile. Like I said, this isn't really going to effect me, but I feel the marathon was forced into the change because of the Houston Fit crowd and what they preach. I think the Houston Marathon did the right thing. However, I wish that maybe for the first 16 miles or so of the race, there would be aid stations every 2 miles. The final 10 miles there should be an aid station every mile I think.

I have to agree with your suggestion. I think you can skip the first mile for sure and do every other mile up to mile 10 like you said.

I think they are making a terrible mistake not leaving the water stops as they have always been. Look at the 25k- people were scrambling like crazy to get water at the stops and some of my friends carried three cups with them to make sure they had water. If we get a day like that on Marathon day, people will be dropping out like crazy! And some bad things will be happening. It's too risky. And, the relief of seeing a water stop at every mile is a "mental" thing for me as well. I like having that to look forward to. If the marathon wants to do us all a favor, maybe they will stop the 7-8 hour walkers instead of the water stops.

Tibbies,

If people are dropping out on race day I would bet it will have more to do with the heat as whole and less to do with the fact that they have to go 1.5 mi. to watwr instead of 1mi.

I think that having a water stop every mile is a waste. Especially early in the race people should be able to go that extra bit. When people train I doubt they drink every mile. Now, for the last few miles perhaps a stop every mile would be a good idea. I definitely think that if they remove some stops they need to make the rest of the stops bigger and easier to access (maybe put water on both sides of the road).

Finally, the jab about eliminating the 7 to 8 hour walkers is just mean. If you are a runner and they are behind you what is the problem?

for slow runners like me...my first
was actually Motorola this
year(5:01:55)..
the 1/2 Marathon was fun...perhaps
the water stations could be changed
to every 1.5...newcomers like me..will
get used to it...although there is a
psycological aspect to it...but heck,
it's all in a mental training
adjustment.

...agrees Joey about the Jab...walk in
their shoes for a moment....perhaps
ole tibbies will learn a thang or two
