I recently had a dog bite when riding my bike. It was a horrible experience. I now have dog repellent with me at all times (HALT). It has been 5 1/2 weeks since this happened and I am still healing. The bite was a very deep bite to my calf. I would recommend everyone be careful with dogs and be prepared to protect yourself.

Sorry to hear about such a terrible attack. I'd encourage you to report this to the police and consider some legal action. The owners are responsible for your injuries. They need to learn that they can't let dogs run free out on the roads. I've had one almost run into my front wheel, and another dog almost got ran over by an approaching dump truck.

If you see this dog out again. Just call the county animal control and let them know about your attack.

I've read Richard's Bicycle Book. He talks frankly about how to handle a vicious dog. If it comes down to you and the dog, use your bike to block an attack and stand your ground. If the dog won't back off use a frame pump or a u-lock to protect yourself. I can't vouch for HALT, but definately carry it and don't be shy about using it.

Take care and keep on cycling. ~Rich

Hi Rich. Thank you for replying to my message. I did report it and they kept the dog confined for 10 days in quarantine. I will take your advice. I have a frame pump and I will not hesitate to use my HALT. I am determined not to let this affect my biking and running. I have been riding a long time and never had a problem with a bad dog. It happened so quick. Thank you again for writing. Rebecca

I've found a squirt from my water bottle works quite well. In the past, I almost fell off my bike when trying to strike a dog with my air pump. Good luck!
