Weekend triathlon race update

U.S. triathlete Andy Potts took his first victory as an elite on Sunday when he won the Memphis in May Triathlon.

Potts (Princeton, N.J.), a 2004 Olympian who had not competed in a race where drafting on the bike was not legal, completed the intermediate distance race in 1 hour, 47 minutes 2 seconds.

Two-time Ironman world champion Tim DeBoom (Lyons, Colo.) was second in 1:48:55 and Jamie Cleveland (Austin, Texas) was third in 1:52:01.

Canada's Natasha Filliol won the women's race in 2:01:32. The second-place finisher was U.S. age group triathlete Erin Ford (Columbus, Ohio), who finished in 2:03:59.

U.S. elite Lauren Jensen (New Berlin, Wis.) was third overall in 2:04:17 and Desiree Ficker (Potomac, Md.) was fourth in 2:07:50.

Auburn International Triathlon

U.S. elite Nicole DeBoom won the women's race Saturday at the Auburn International Triathlon in Auburn, Calif., after the race had to be turned into a duathlon due to problems with Lake Clementine.

Snowmelt and storms had filled the lake with debris and the water temperature was measured at 49 degrees. Competitors ended up doing a 3k run, 56-mile bike and another 13.1-mile run.

The race served as the USA Triathlon Elite Long Distance Triathlon National Championship.

DeBoom (Lyons, Colo.), the defending champion, completed the race in 4:48:50. Canada's Marilyn MacDonald was second in 4:53:06 and Kristianna Gough (San Leandro, Calif.) was third in 4:53:21.

Josiah Middaugh (Vail, Colo.) was the top U.S. finisher in the men's race, where he was third overall in 4:19:00

Cyril Neveu of France won the men's race in 4:11:04 and Clas Bjorling of Sweden was second in 4:15:50.

Columbia Triathlon

Olympic bronze medalist Susan Williams (Littleton, Colo.) and U.S. elite Paul Fritzsche (Danbury, Conn.) were the women and men's overall winners at the Columbia Triathlon on Sunday in Columbia, Md.

Williams set a new course record, completing the 1.5k swim, 41k bike and 10k run in 2:07:22. Fritzsche finished in 1:59:17.

Ford Florida Half Ironman

U.S. elites Michael Lavato and Heather Gollnick were the top American finishers at the Ford Florida Half Ironman on Sunday at WALT DISNEY WORLD(R) Resort. Both finished fourth overall.

Great Britain's Simon Lessing won the men's race, completing the 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike and a 13.1-mile run in 3:52:06. Victor Zyemtsev of Ukraine was second in 3:57:41 and Luke Bell of Australia was third in 3:58:25. Lovato finished in 4:00:54.

On the women's side, Natascha Badmann of Switzerland finished first in 4:23:17. Australia's Mirinda Carfrae was second in 4:30:20 and Kate Major of Australia was third in 4:30:43. Gollnick (Hartford, Wis.) finished in 4:34:17.
