Nate Smith of Merrill, Iowa, and Leslie Curley of Topeka, Kan., were the overall men's and women's winners at the 2005 USA Triathlon National Age Group Long Course Triathlon Championships on Saturday in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The race, which was part of the CATS Half Triathlon, consisted of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13-mile run. Temperatures on race day were warm, but not as hot as predicted.
The championship was a qualifier for the 2006 ITU Long Course Triathlon World Championships in Canberra, Australia.
Smith, 22, completed the race in 4 hours, 27 minutes and 58 seconds and had by far the fastest run of the day at 1:26:10. Holger Beckmann (Redondo Beach, Calif.), 40, was second overall in 4:33:55 and Chuck Engle (Ridgeland, Miss.), 34, was third in 4:35:57.
Curley, 35, who finished second overall at the 2004 U.S. Half Triathlon Championship, completed the course in 4:55:17. Elizabeth Fedofsky (Naperville, Ill.), 30, was second overall in 4:56:34 and Jennifer Johnson (Tulsa, Okla.), 28, was third overall in 4:59:15.
