Sunny skies and enthusiastic spectators greeted the 800 athletes competing at the USA Triathlon 2006 Age Group Triathlon National Championships at Smithville Lake near Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday.

And the competitors did not disappoint. The event featured the crowning of national champions in 26 age groups, with the top 16 in each category earning spots on Team USA for the World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland in September.

Marc Bonnet-Eymard of Winter Garden, Fla. took the men's overall title and Jennifer Garrison of Naperville, Ill. took the women's crown.

The 35-year-old Eymard overcame 23-year-old Hawaii resident Ben Collins(1) 27-second advantage on the swim with a 59:58 bike and a 37:08 run to finish in 1:57:10, 90 seconds in front of Collins, the overall runner-up. Bonnet-Eymard, who took third overall at last year's ITU age group world championship in Honolulu, won the 35-39 crown by four minutes and 30 seconds over runner-up Craig Greenslit of Berthoud, Colo.

"I had a good time and I put my best out there," said Bonnet- Eymard, last year(1)s USAT Male Triathlete of the Year. "I'd like to end the season on a great note in Lausanne. I'm excited about the city and the culture of sport in Europe. There's great talent there. Hopefully, it will be the best of the best."

Another impressive finish was turned in by 62-year-old David Roadhouse of Wilmette, Ill., last year(1)s 60-64 world champion. Roadhouse was third out of the water and was able to pull into the lead a mile into the bike, but the younger legs of Collins and 30-34 champ J.J. Bailey of Des Moines, Iowa, allowed them to edge ahead. Roadhouse finished with a time of 2:22. Bailey earned the day(1)s faster bike split in 58:38.63.

"One of my goals was to have fun, and I had to remind myself of that, because I was working really hard in every leg," said Roadhouse. "I'm excited to go to worlds. I'm really proud to represent the United States and my entire age group."

Making most of her time with an impressive second-best-of-the- day 1:06:53 bike on Smithville's relentless rolling hills, recent mother Garrison, 28, earned a 40-second advantage over the women's overall runner-up Wendy Mader, 33, of Ft. Collins, Colo., at the finish - 2:13:20 to 2:14:00. Garrison earned a 7- minute 16-second margin over 25-29 runner-up Brianne Gaal of Orlando, Fla.

Brian Bich of Duluth, Minn., and Holly Nybo of Portola Valley, Calif., were the top male and female Master finishers, with Roadhouse and Trish Kimper of Solana Beach, Calif., grabbing the Grand Master titles.

Perennial Team USA members Susan Bradley-Cox, Laura Sophiea, Steven Smith, Ken Nash, and Pat Fossum also earned nationals titles in their age groups.

With his 5:03:16 finish, 86-year-old Charlie Futrell of The Villages, Fla., won the 85-and-over crown unopposed. A stalwart group of supportive spectators gave a rounding ovation as Futrel and several other Grand Master competitors finished the 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run course.
