U.S. elites Victor Plata and Julie Swail each finished second to
the Brits on Sunday at the International Triathlon Union World
Cup race in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, each posting the best
World Cup finish of their careers.Plata (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), who finished third at Corner
Brook last year, finished second to Britain's Tim Don, who ran a
21:49 10k to win in 1 hour, 54 minutes. Plata ran with Don for
several laps, but finally fell back and finished in 1:54:36.
Bruno Pais of Portugal was third in 1:54:46.
U.S. elite Mark Fretta (Portland, Ore.) finished fifth and Joe
Umphenour (Bellevue, Wash.) was sixth.
Don's third World Cup victory of the season puts pressure on
U.S. elite Hunter Kemper (Longwood, Fla.), who currently leads
the ITU World Cup standings. Don is just 10 points behind
Kemper, who is scheduled to race at the Edmonton World Cup on
Saturday (July 23).
In the women's race, Swail (Irvine, Calif.) was the first
athlete into the first transition and rode with the lead pack on
the bike. Great Britain's Andrea Whitcombe took a lead on the
run and went on to win in 2:08:47. Swail outran Japan's Kiyomi
Niwata for second place in 2:09:38. Niwata finished in 2:09:48.
Sarah Haskins (St. Louis, Mo.), racing in her second World Cup,
won one of the bike primes and finished seventh. Jenna Shoemaker
(Sudbury, Mass.), racing in her first World Cup, finished 12th.

Life Time Fitness Results
U.S. elite Joanna Zeiger (Boulder, Colo.) won $30,000 for
finishing second among the women and Hunter Kemper (Longwood,
Fla.) took $20,000 for placing third among the men at the Life
Time Fitness Triathlon on Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn.
Australian Craig Alexander won the big money, $160,000 in cash
and a Toyota 4Runner worth another $40,000. Simon Whitfield of
Canada was second overall and Kemper was third overall.
Emma Snowsill of Australia was fourth overall and the first
female finisher. Annabel Luxford of Australia was the third-
place woman and seventh overall.
The Life Time Fitness Triathlon is an intermediate-distance race
but uses an "equalizer" format for the elite race that gave the
women a 9 minute, 39 second head start on the men.
In the amateur race, which served as the USA Triathlon Midwest
Regional Championship, Chris Peeters (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
won the overall men's race in 2:02:35. Ji Bailey of Des Moines,
Iowa, was second in 2:05:41 and Michael Boehmer was third in
2:05:53.
Elizabeth Attig (Naperville, Ill.) won the women's race in
2:16:42. Wendy Mader (Fort Collins, Colo.) was second in 2:17:24
and Catherine Sterling (Waterville, Maine) was third in 2:18:32.
