Junior Racing
Nineteen junior athletes from across New England competed Sunday
at the Webster Lake Triathlon, stage two of the 2005 New England
Junior Triathlon Championship Series.
The race was dedicated to Patrick Bell of Greenfield, Mass., a
member of the Vortex Racing Triathlon Development Team and USA
Triathlon member who died on June 19 a few hours after finishing
a local intermediate-distance triathlon. The cause of death is
unknown at this time.
Calin Brammer (17; Marblehead, Mass.), competing for Vortex
Racing, claimed first place among the junior men and took home
the stage winner's jersey. Maine's Sean Teel (17, Mid-Coast
Multisport) took second and Connecticut's Alister Ratcliff (17,
Enhance Sports), the series leader going into the race, had to
settle for third after a dropped chain slowed his chase on the
bike. Ratcliff's performance, however, was good enough to retain
his overall lead in the series after two stages.
In the junior women's race, Vortex Racing's Heather Wolfe (19,
Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) edged teammate Mary Casinghino (18,
Manchester, N.H.) for the win. Casinghino and Wolfe are now tied
for the series lead going into stage three, the SoBe Mossman
Triathlon on July 17.
Vortex Racing Director Steve Kelley was proud of his team's
performance, which came only a week after learning of Bell's
death. "Last week was emotionally draining for the team, even
the new members who didn't know Patrick well," Kelley said. "But
the team honored him with their competitive spirit today. This
win is dedicated to him."
