Weekend multi-sport race recap
April 27, 2004

Courtesy: USAT

One week after qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team by finishing second in Hawaii, elite triathlete Hunter Kemper was back on the podium Sunday after finishing third at the International Triathlon Union World Cup race in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Canada's Simon Whitfield, who beat Kemper to win the Race to Athens - Honolulu on April 18, won the men's elite Olympic distance race in Mazatlan, finishing in one hour, 50 minutes, 31 seconds. Kazakhstan's Dmitriy Gaag was second in 1:50:36 and Kemper (Longwood, Fla.) was right behind in 1:50:37.

Julie Swail was the top U.S. finisher in the women's race in 10th. It was Swail's (Irvine, Calif.) best finish in an ITU World Cup race since she joined the elite/pro ranks at the beginning of 2003.

Carla Moreno of Brazil won the women's race in 2:01:04. Anja Dittmer of Germany was second in 2:01:05 and Australia's Maxine Seear was third in 2:01:09.

Kemper and Swail will compete next at the ITU Triathlon World Championships on May 9 in Madeira, Portugal. The top U.S. men and women's finishers will qualify for the second spots on the U.S. Olympic triathlon team. If Kemper is the top U.S. men's finisher, the slot will roll down to the next U.S. man. The same is true on the women's side, where Barb Lindquist was the top U.S. finisher in Honolulu and took the first slot.

The following teams will compete for the U.S. at the world championships:

Women

Barb Lindquist (Victor, Idaho), Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich.), Laura Reback (North Palm Beach, Fla.), Susan Williams (Littleton, Colo.), Julie Swail (Irvine, Calif.), Kelly Cook (Marietta, Ga.). Alternate: Jessi Stensland (San Diego, Calif.)

Men

Hunter Kemper (Longwood, Fla.), Joe Umphenour (Bellevue, Wash.), Doug Friman (Tucson, Ariz.), Victor Plata (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), Andy Potts (Princeton, N.J.), Michael Smedley (Buchanan, Mich.). Alternate: Brian Fleischmann (Jacksonville, Fla.).

USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships

Barrett Brandon of the University of Nebraska and Caitlin Shea- Kinney of the University of Massachusetts - Amherst were the top men and women's finishers Saturday at the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Brandon completed the Olympic distance course in 1:57:34. Brendan O'Brien of the University of California at San Diego was second in 1:58:12. Manny Huerta of Florida Atlantic University was third in 1:58:46.

Jenna Shoemaker of Harvard was second among the women in 2:15:16. Sunny Gilbert of the University of Colorado - Boulder was third in 2:16:11.

Team results will be posted to the USA Triathlon web site as soon as they are available. Complete individual results are available at http://www.tucsonracing.com/NCTres04.htm.

St. Anthony's Triathlon

Australia's Michellie Jones and Craig Walton were the winners of the women and men's professional races at the St. Anthony's Triathlon, an Olympic distance non-drafting race, on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Aussies swept the men's race as Richie Cunningham finished second and Miles Stewart was third. Kerry Classen of Bend, Ore., was the top U.S. men's finisher in fifth.

U.S. elite/pro Jessi Stensland (San Diego, Calif.) was second to Jones in the women's race and Desiree Ficker (Potomac, Md.) was third.

The professional prize purse was $50,000.

A brand new venue at Vinoy Park allowed 1,000 more athletes to compete in 2004 than competed in 2003. A total of 3,000 individual athletes filled the race.
