Does anyone know the difference between a triathlon bicycle and a regular road bicycle.

I like doing triathlons but I don't want to pay thousands of dollars for a state of the art triathlon bike. I just want a tri-bike for $1000.00 or less. But I don't even know why I need a tri-bike over a road bike.

Also are there any stores in Houston that anybody would suggest that have good triathlon bikes or should I mail order.

Thanks Runguy that information was perfect:

Looks like I could have better understood that article, had I not cheated in geometry in high school.

I'm not an expert, but it has alot to do with positioning. Steep seat angles vs. shallow angles, etc. You'll be fine slapping an aero bar on your bike and going for it. Look @ the Cervelo Dual---has all the benefits of a "tri" bike in a road geometry frame.

Lance, since I was in your position two years ago I wanted to drop in my two cents. I most likely got the same info you did on that site. I started out with a $350 used road bike with some clip on aero's. But the advice that helped me the most was this. If you are going to be competing in triathlon on a regular basis, get a tri-bike. I was able to post some good times on my road bike, but last year I bit the bullet and got a nice entry level tri-bike. It really kicks! I would make two recommendations. If you are going to buy a new bike you should look at the Cervelo or the Felt S-22 and S-32. These are excellent bikes for the price. Also you can find great deals on used tri-bikes! if you check out local tri-clubs or their sites. I love my tri-bike but I can easily drop a long group ride as well. I can't say that the geometry of the tri-bike is as advantageous as the gear end shifters on the areos. Good luck, you'll figure it out.
